PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It's a unique number given which contains the travelling details of passenger or a group of passengers.

Why PNR number.

When a train ticket is booked, all the details of the passenger (name, contact information, train, etc) are stored in centralized system and a  unique ten digit number is given to the passenger. This number is PNR number and it always printed on your ticket. PNR number allows easy management of booking by Indian Railways. By PNR number one can check the train details or the ticket information.

How PNR number is generated.

One the ticket has been booking the CRS (central reservation system) will automatically generate a unique 10 digit number for your ticket. PNR  Number is always on the ticket whether taken from station window or e-ticket.

How to find PNR number. 

While booking online ticket or from the station window the PNR number is on the top of the ticket that contains 10 digit number.
